Hosting Your own Blog Server

There are many blog programs out there that will allow you to host wikis and blogs at your school. Most are free and are easy to setup. If you have a webserver and a willing technology department hosting your own wiki or blog server is well within your reach. Here is the blog program we recommend.

Some Examples and Resources for Learning via Podcasts

Web-based options for Quick Podcasting

There were several options for web-based podcasts shared in the Podcasting for Windows morning session, so please check there for other ideas.

  • Podcast People http://www.podcastpeople.com
    • This is NOT a free site-there is a small monthly fee
    • One owner can share authorship with others
    • Blogs or Podcasts
    • Upload files from computer or record on the site
    • No ads
      • Temporary logins will be provided for use in testing the site

Other Tools to support Podcasting

  • Microphones
    • A mic that plugs into the computer will provide better sound than the internal mic
    • A headset that has a mic and earphones can help in open areas
  • Audio recorders
    • ipods with a 3rd party mic added (Belkin, iTalk) Nano or Classic -about $150-$250
    • Sony player recorder - about $75
  • Video
    • Flip video- usb youtube quality video- from $125-$300

Considerations:

  • AUP-Be sure that it is up-to-date to handle the creation of content (staff or student)
  • Web Content Policy- to address the how-tos of posting student information and content-often included in AUP
  • Hosting of content
    • In-house ( talk to your Tech Director)
    • Web-based such as PodcastPeople - $5/month-$50/month-depeding on features and space
    • Off-site hosting- such as BlueHost and SiteGround- requires that you have a domain- $100/year, but requires that you manage the setup
